Introduction

Close The Gap Foundation (CTG) is committed to the safety and well-being of our students, including minors who participate in our Programs and Fellowships.

As stated in the Policy Regarding Volunteer Compliance with California Assembly Bill 506 of 2021, the State of California recently enacted the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) which implements new background check and training standards for California Youth Service Organizations such as your Council. CANRA will supplement CTG’s existing obligations in order to provide a safe environment for the youth we serve and to prevent child abuse and neglect. The following policy will provide additional guidance on compliance with CANRA.

CANRA goes into effect on January 1, 2022. All registered CTG volunteer positions and employees must comply with CANRA. In addition, other volunteers who are 18 years of age or older and who have direct contact with, or supervision of, children for more than 16 hours a month or 32 hours per year must complete a Checkr background screening and complete online mandated reporter training.

Close The Gap Foundation Mandated Reporter Training Requirements

In response to CANRA, All Employees, Registered Adult Volunteers, and Regular Volunteer positions identified as requiring training shall complete California-mandated training (2 hours) beginning January 1, 2022. The training is available at https://mandatedreporterca.com/

training/volunteers, and includes training in child abuse and neglect identification, in addition to training in child abuse and neglect reporting.

Regular Volunteer means a volunteer with CTG who is 18 years of age or older and who has direct contact with, or supervision of, children more than 16 hours per month or 32 hours per year.

Background Screening Procedures

CANRA requires all Employees, Registered Adult Volunteers, and Regular Volunteers (age 18 or older) who have more than 16 hours a month (or 32 hours per year) of contact with a youth to complete a Checkr Background Screening. For more information regarding how CTG conducts, stores, and responds to Background Screenings, please visit our policy found here.
